Speaking of mining accidents, there are right now 29 miners stuck in a coal mine in New Zealand after an explosion. I suppose they are all dead. en.wikipedia.org

I'm well aware of the need to avoid more people going in to die but the people in charge seem to be unduly careful.

It seems that one or two people could go in with lights, breathing equipment and maybe some spare breathing gear in case they find anyone alive and perhaps with some protective clothing to reduce damage from unfortunate events.

The chance of another explosion seems low. Perhaps the mining experts know best, but TSA airport screening is clueless as are most government efforts. They are screening pilots! They seem not to know that pilots are in charge of the steering wheel and are armed in the cockpit, with at least a cockpit axe if not actual guns. They have the local Bobby in charge of the mine so it seems likely they are not doing very well.

A father of one of the miners is very unimpressed by how hopeless they seem. I would feel like him.
