I must say I know very little about China or Japan or their culture, as my interactions are limited to just a few normal and sensible individuals of chinese and japanese descent living in United States. In any case, the alleged Japanese obsession with underpants, however strange it seems to you and me, is a non-issue in judging the whole society.

As to the Chinese bosses in the single party system, americans are finding out that their two parties seems to be a sham, with both parties behaving remarkable similarly on many issues.

A single party system obviously has less checks and balances, but has enough internal struggle for power that it may not be completely autocratic.

Anyway, the communist party has taken up the challenge of trying to improve the material lot of their countrymen. Whether the intention is to do good, or stay in power, or to rake in the disproportionate monetary gains, legal and illegal, that come to the party officials in power; the party has shown a great degree of discipline in execution of a strategy that has made China more competitive in organizational and technological ability.
