The coverage gap still kicks in after you and your plan have spent $2,840 on covered drugs and doesn't go away until participants spend $4,550. However, during the coverage gap - known as the donut hole - there will be discounts: 50% for brand-name drugs and 7% for generics.

Also, out-of-pocket costs, which determine when participants get out of the donut hole, will include the full cost of brand-name drugs, meaning people will get through the coverage gap faster. Consumers' share of costs will continue to decrease each year until the donut hole phases out in 2020.
