On a canned bird hunt no birds are drugged (that's a myth) - they are farm raised and released. Many do get away, but since they were farm raised it would have been better for all if they had been shot. I have friends with bird dogs that do this for pheasant as training and due to the fact pheasants don't survive in this area on their own due to the wetness more than the cold. wdfw.wa.gov Western Washington Pheasant Release Program The major goal of the pheasant program in western Washington is to provide an upland bird hunting opportunity. The program also encourages participation from young and older aged hunters. The cool, wet climate of western Washington combined with the lack of grain farming limits naturally sustained pheasant populations. Each year 30,000 to 40,000 pheasants are released on about 25 release sites. I went once years ago but the cost is rather high and I don't have a bird dog. Nothing wrong with canned hunts - trying to find a farmer willing to let strangers shoot on their land is rather difficult.
