I imagine that a capacity for religion is a border condition, one that humans still occupy. Chimps are nonsapient. Humans are in late presapience. When (if!) chimps are allowed/induced to evolve toward greater intelligence, I would be quite unsurprised to see emergent religion, say stones and branches arrayed ritually before a tree.
