Okay you said religion was a "holdover of our prehuman animal nature." If that were true, we'd see signs of religious activity in non-human species. If you can't supply any evidence of that, why not just admit you were wrong.

Then you abandon that position and adopt the opposite:

When (if!) chimps are allowed/induced to evolve toward greater intelligence, I would be quite unsurprised to see emergent religion ..

Religion is now a result of becoming human, not a "holdover from prehuman animal nature."

I'm getting the idea you don't know much about the subject.
