To see signs of religious activity, you would need two things.
1) Some sort of tool use.
2) A culture.

Apes use tools but don't have cultural traditions. If the tribe doesn't have and pass on stories, how can religion evolve? The elders need to remember stuff and teach the young. Apes do not seem to do that. Yet...

Killer whales (I don't much hold with the pc revision "orcas") have been described as having cultures, behaviors passed from elders to youngins within the pod. But since they don't kake or use tools, if they have religious impulses we have no way of telling.
