A lot of people are attacking that JAVA survey in general terms as "nonsense" or MSFT FUD, but I'm wondering what the responses are to the various claims the developers in the survey make, namely:

1. need to test on multiple platforms
2. incompatibilities between JDK 1.02 and JDK 1.1, different virtual machines, different tool kits.
3. lack of open standards
4. poor performance
5. "It costs more to write Java applications" [according to one developer]

In other words, I wonder if the thread can have a substantive discussion of the merit, or lack of merit, of the claims made in the survey. Are these serious problems or are they not? Can Sun overcome them? I know the thread has touched on these issues at various times before, and I've read those discussions, yet I wasn't prepared for the overwhelming negativity of this survey and wonder if a concentrated and fresh airing of these issues is possible.
