In a weird role reversal, Juniper Networks, a startup developing next-generation routers, will use leading-edge ASIC technology from IBM in its as-yet-unannounced high-performance router. Juniper officials acknowledged IBM's past reluctance to enter emerging markets until the investment could be justified, but that was then, and this is now. And now IBM has opened its foundries--renowned for their advanced and stable ASIC design methodology--to outside designers.
