I recall we discussed the same thing over the years. Carter abruptly abandoned the Shah, creating a power vacuum - and, of course, an opportunity for the Islamist revolutionaries led by Khomeini. A similar exercise in Nicaragua allowed Sandinistas to take power, and led to a horrible bloody war in El Salvador. Helsinki accord cleared the path for the Soviets to become more aggressive, including the war in Afghanistan.

Now, too -- not only is Iran forging ahead with their nuclear weapon program, but they even have the nerve to be a powerful presence in Iraq. Just last night NK bombed South Korea. Etc... The world is becoming an interesting place. The weaker the US stature and leadership, the more interesting it becomes.
