California utilities may stop rebates for server virtualization

Utility consultant says energy providers may stop handing out rebates for virtualization and data center consolidation because it is already a common practice.

11/23/2010 | Yevgeniy Sverdlik

PG&E, a California energy company with one of the oldest and largest programs for incentivizing companies to increase energy efficiency in their data centers through energy rebates may cut incentives for data center virtualization and consolidation and create a wave of similar actions by other utilities.

According to Mark Bramfitt, who had spent many years developing and promoting PG&E’s incentive program for data centers, the utility is planning to stop offering rebates to companies for virtualizing their environments and consolidating the physical footprint of their IT equipment. According to a post bit.ly in Bramfitt’s blog, the company is likely to strike such projects from the program early next year.
