I did not blame Republicans, I blamed conservatives.
You stated the sentence with an attack on Republicans. If you wanted to narrowly focus your point on conservatives you should have mentioned just them.
And what do you mean voting agaisnt the 64 civil rights act did not imply being a racist. Are you kidding? That was all it was about.
I kidding? No. What do I mean? Exactly what I said.
Many of the votes against it, perhaps most of them, where about racism, or pandering to racists. But not all of them. As I've already pointed out there are constitutional and libertarian issues with the law, and esp. with its judicial extensions. The idea that the constitution gives congress the power to enact a law that includes the parts of this law applying to private citizens is dubious, and while racism is obnoxious and negative for the country, racists have rights such as freedom of association as well.
Its an unfortunate truth that -
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."

LBJ is quoted as saying after the 64 civil rights act: "we jsut lost the south for a generation" So what? He said that, it doesn't mean its true, in fact it wasn't. The South only gradually shifted to supporting Republicans, (with Carter winning all of the South except VA when he was elected president), and Democrats still get support there (Clinton won several southern states, and even recently Obama won 55 electoral votes from formerly confederate states). So they didn't lose the south, and to the extent they moved in that direction it was much later, and mostly do to issues that have little or nothing to do with racism. Liberals get elected in the Southern states, and the only reason it doesn't happen more often is because the south is on the average less "liberal" than the rest of the country. What it probably isn't is more racist. I've seen more racism in New York, than I've seen in the south. Racism happens everywhere and it always did (even if the problem is declining), but its not an important issue in today's national political situation, particularly not in terms of partisan balance.
I've responded to your attacks with some (false) point or content. The rest of your post is just contentless attack, and not worth bothering with. |
