We vote for the school board, city council, emergency medical serivces and a zillion other things. The ancient Greeks first thought about rule by the people, a republic. Many variations. It was a novel idea. 1,000 years ago people could have complete freedom by simply walking out into the bush. But they didn't because without the tribe they died. But to be with the tribe you had to give up some freedoms. But tribes had chiefs, war lords and dictators. In Plato's Republic people ruled themselves. Rule by the people is the most freedom you will ever have. the laws are the people's will.
