< Now that the Java hype has died down, investors will be more interested in who can make money off of Java. >
David,
I think the Java hype (such as it is) is just starting to pick up! With Sun and Microsoft duking it out in public, Borland can't lose no matter what happens. The best publicity for Borland isn't costing them a penny, because when you have 2 major players voicing such strong opinions for a language, that says (at least to me) that the language has a purpose. I really don't care that much for either company, but Borland will reap the benefits of the attention.
I do agree with your view of the enterprise tools. I think my personal interest in Java has me a little biased. My trip to Borders today tells me it's more than just a casual interest to others - Borders is considered the master at adjusting their book inventories to what people want. The big subjects are Office97, Lotus Notes, C++, Web design, HTML and Java.
