Bludger is a good Kiwi word which used to have common usage. As bludgers have proliferated, they are a social norm and are called "clients" or even "customers" ... truly, they are. In government lingo, beneficiaries are not [of course] bludgers. They use euphemistic words like "client". One of the reasons China and others are on the rapid rise is that they don't suffer the depredations of vast legions of bludgers. People work, or get quite hungry. Yes, bludgers are everywhere as I go about my travels. Decades ago, I worked at Auckland Sheltered Workshops for the mentally and physically disabled. They did productive work, as best they were able. We had good fun. I drove a van taking them to work and home again as well as supervising [and joining in] a day a week. I have a good friend with a broken neck and now an incomplete tetraplegic. I know about some people having grave difficulties in life. New Zealand did not go from about 4,000 unemployed and otherwise incapacitated 4 decades ago to 400,000 now because of a vast rush of accidents and other problems. It was a financially successful social shift for many people to enjoy life in a more luxurious way than actually working for a living. That will come back to bite them as the workers give up, leave [as they are doing] or the economy goes bust [as has happened in Greece and Ireland where the bludgers are finding their incomes cut at a very inconvenient time - just when there aren't loads of lovely jobs]. Another variable in NZ is that it's being taken over by people from China and elsewhere. Those people will not wish to work to keep the bludgers in the manner to which they have become accustomed. They will vote welfare to be canceled when they have the numbers, which they are getting as the bludgers bring more in in an attempt to keep the game going, not realizing what they are doing. Fortunately, I have a passport and can leave them to it when the time is right. Mqurice
