Re: Apple's on-line store. I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with Jon on this one. I was NOT impressed and--speaking as a longtime Mac user--more than a little disappointed with the site. I tried to "build" a PowerBook G3 and there wasn't even an option to add more memory. Sure, you could add an additional battery, or even a 17" monitor. But what about the things that really matter, like extra RAM for instance? Or a notebook Zip drive? Or networking options?
Compared to Dell's site, which is outstanding, Apple's is pathetic. And while Dell is oriented to sales worldwide, Apple's site only sells to US customers, a fact that you only learn when you read the store's policy statement! What about the rest of the world? Japan, for instance, happens to be Apple's most important market outside the US. But there appears to be no attempt at all to reach out to customers there. Or any other country, for that matter. I can't believe how shortsighted the marketing people at Apple still are. After all that red ink, you'd think they'd wake up.
True, we can't expect Apple to get it all right the first time round. But I sure hope this company gets it act together in the very, very near future, or this site is going to be a laughing stock for the likes of Dell and Compaq, who really know what they are doing.
