I am only speculating here.

If I were going to use GMR in a read head I would not complicate the process with KM. Whenever you do any first production run or testing you always use the easiest scenerio. KM does not fit into that catagory. But, KM can be used to increase the effectiveness of using GMR, I think.

Let's remember that KM is applied to the recording media, ie hard disk/tape. In order for a saturating flux to be applied to the KM media in the region of the stored bit, the saturating flux directs the magnetic field stored within the KM layer to the read head, a localized magnetic field is applied. A variety of methods could provide this field but nearly all of them involve modifications to the read head. This is one reason KM has been slow to be incorporated, because people want to buy mass produced heads for the lower price it creates. I suspect mass produced heads can be modified but then you lose some of the price advatage by paying for the modifications.

Researchers at corporations are often not allowed to talk about their research outside of the corporations but I suspect that since your friend said he only works on the head and he was unaware of KM that to me indicates no KM. It does not make sense to put KM in your first model though.

Hopefully the price of AXC went up not on speculation of KM in IBM GMR drives but on Bramson buying. Was this Bramson buying from other directors, or from the public?
