'Lives depend on us defining that right' is correct in every way whether one likes it or not. I have not had it compellingly demonstrated to me that these lives are immediately eligible for personhood. How about 1 year olds? Peter Singer (an 'ethicist') says you need to be two to be a person. The only way I see out is to invoke a ruling on personhood handed down by fiat, invariably by consulting religious doctrine. That may be right. Maybe the only thing making Peter Singer wrong is religious doctrine. I don't accept top-down religious premises, so as near as I can see we won't arrive at consensus. You8're right, we won't.
