This is misplaced pseudohumanitarianism.

All sorts of undeserved misfortunes afflict human beings, but taking on loans at interest rates that they cannot afford to buy houses bigger than they need to live comfortably--even luxuriously--in is not such a misfortune.

I write this as someone who lived for many years in rented rooms and small apartments and a rented house, and did not dare to buy a house until I was almost 40 years old.

This kind of softheadedness plays right into econo-Darwinian Tea Party politics. And, in the other political direction, trends toward Pol Pot solutions for social inequities.
