Santo was not mediocre and his stats justify his inclusion in the HOF. He chances were hurt by the fact that he never played in a World Series and that he was the main cog in the 1969 Cubs debacle. His infamous "heel click" certainly didn't help.

Bear in mind that this is a White Sox fan talking. And I hate the Cubs more than I hate the Yankees and the Red Sox. Other than Sammy Sosa, there is no Cubs player that I detested more in his playing days than Ron Santo. Maybe my thoughts are a bit clouded by the way he lived his life. He was a Type 1 diabetic who did not disclose his disease until near the end of his career. He lost both of his legs to diabetes and never whined once. He raised over $60 million for diabetes related causes. As I said he was a real mensch.

Check out Santo's stats:

Bill James, a notable statistical guru who has ranked Santo among the 100 greatest players of all time (sixth among third basemen), believes his election to the Hall of Fame is long overdue.
