European parliamentarians have urged the European Commission to cut off structural funding to regions that perennially misspend the money, in the hope of further driving down fraud around the €347bn programme.

The parliamentary hearing centred on the annual report of the European Court of Auditors, the independent watchdog of EU funds, which last month found that more than a third of structural funds payments were affected by error. Some €700m out of €23bn paid in 2009 for the current budget period should not have been, either because of maladministration or fraud, it found.
