MILPITAS, Calif., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Read-Rite Corporation today announced that Samsung Corporation has qualified Read-Rite's magnetoresistive (MR) recording heads for its SpinPoint series MR desktop hard disk drive program with capacity points ranging from 2.1 to 6.3 GB. Read-Rite will supply MR recording heads supporting 2.1 GB per 3.5-inch disk....

It looks like Samsung is going to be using IBM's 1.6 GB/platter MR heads for one program, RDRT's 2.1 GB/platter MR heads for another program. This is probably why Samsung required Ampex to demonstrate that KM works with MR heads from other manufacturers. The question is at what point on the density scale will Samsung use KM, if at all. Everything I have read suggests to me that the mainstream heads next year will be in the 2.5-3.0 GB/platter range.

By the way, folks, don't forget that Samsung is going to make 2.5-3.0 million PCs this year. If Samsung qualifes KM for its disk drives then it qualifies KM for its PCs.
