Don't agree with your statement that very few Republicans will vote for him after his first 2 years. I agree with your other two statements.

Obama has shown a tendency towards some of the social values that the Republicans espouse. One such is the Don't Ask Don't Tell. He has the left wing upset because of his soft pedaling on this issue. He is doing much better on the foreign policy front compared to his predecessor. He has remained engaged in the Afghan war. So he has the Republican support since these are some issues that Republicans want. He is already in the middle because of these.

I like his approach of his willing to negotiate on keeping the Bush tax cuts as is if the Repubs vote on to extend the unemployment benefits. That is a fair deal while the rich figure out how to increase employment opportunities with the Bush tax cuts.
