From your statement it appears that you are presuming that the govt uses the money wisely.

Usually, yes. But governments are just humans, and humans make mistakes. Our governments probably use funds as wisely as the private sector, and more wisely than individuals.

You may be thinking that the key to a successful country is a large govt.

Well if you look around the world you'll see that all the successful countries have large governments. So yeah that is true. Not the only key, but a key. Natural resources help a lot. Respect for the rule of law, etc.

What do you think is the key to US success?

Not wanting higher taxes does not necessarily mean one is selfish or has a me first attitude.

It does when your communities can't repair or build needed infrastructure and services.

Lots of generations have paid dearly for the stuff that you are enjoying and do not want to maintain for future generations.

The civic minded cloth coat conservatives of the past would call you guys selfish and me first, that's for sure.
