Listen if you get the chance.. to a Mandarin speaker count to 10 and then a Cantonese speaker do likewise.

I've been told that most Chinese can't understand one another when they travel outside of their regional area...

But what binds them together is a common written language..

Same thing in Arabic... Vast differences in pronunciation between Egyptian dialect and Iraqi and Syrian.. But the written language is commonly understood.

And try going to "Cajun' Country" in Lousiana.. Order yourself up a plate of "lip smacking yardbird" (chicken).. ;0)

Btw.. hope your vacation was refreshing and that your son had a good time as well!!

I'm pondering a trip to China this spring/summer.. I find myself fascinated by the Chinese people.. (don't have much to say for the government, but I generally like the Chinese people I've known).. Just a huge amount of potential there and a real desire for a better life.
