A trip to China is very instructive also IMO. and yes even Mandarin from city to city varies .. Then again so does French from Ontario to PEI (very archaic) where I had some trouble.. We took the Yangtze cruise to Three Gorges last go... Should still be good even with final flooding... We walked around everywhere.. no hassles... If my kids were older all around I would like to spend 6 months to a year in China.. a good base to explore Japan, Australia, Drop in on Mq :O), etc etc..
