My girlfriend and I spent a month each in Yunnan, Guizhou and Guanxi provinces in 2007. We got pretty far off the beaten track and had an absolutely splendid time. China's very user-friendly and easy to get around. Most things like rooms, transportation and food are comparatively quite cheap (at least where we were). The people were very welcoming, but not overbearingly curious.

If you ever had an interest in visiting, I'd do it ASAP b/c I've NEVER seen a place changing so rapidly. Feel free to ask if you'd like any feedback about visiting.
