Yes, speciation is a necessary feature of evolutionary theory. But the mechanism of speciation is not. I hoped that this line of posts still carried enough context to include that, but you have shown me to be in error there.

If I remember correctly, your original complaint against calling evolutionary theory a theory as opposed to hypothesis was that it didn't satisfactorily explain speciation from a mechanistic perspective. My counterargument has been that the mechanism of speciation need not be known for the statistics and chronology of speciations to be scientifically significant. The theory deserves to be called theory on the strength of established data, which do not (yet?) give us the insight into how speciation works.
