first the fear of the people in China that both TJ and I spout is important..

Fear on the part of Bejing is not the same as respect. Respect comes from recognizing that their legitimacy as governing body depends upon the support of the citizenry. The fear that Bejing fears is the kind that they demonstrated at Tiananmen Square, which must be contained, and/or crushed, should it pose a threat to their ruling power.

My plans for traveling to China would involve my Aunt, who is native Chinese, so I would definitely avoid the "tourist traps". And if I am able to stay longer, I would hire a translator (hopefully a very cute gal) to accompany me to the various "off the beaten path" areas. I'm sure there would no lack of qualified candidates for such a job.. ;0)
