Inventec ships 60,000 Chrome OS netbooks to Google

Alongside Google's announcement of its new Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system as well as Chrome OS on December 7, Inventec confirmed that it has already shipped about 60,000 Chrome OS-based netbooks to Google, which are expected to be used for testing.

Chrome OS-based products from global PC brand vendors are estimated to appear in channel in the first half of 2011.

Acer has cooperated with Quanta Computer to develop a 10.1-inch Atom N550-based Chrome OS netbook, featuring both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules; however, Acer is conservative about market demand as consumers normally have a difficult time changing their PC habits.

In other news, although Google has unveiled a new version of Android, first-tier vendors plan to hold off until the launch of Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) in the first quarter of 2011 before rolling out tablet PCs, sources from PC players noted.
