the following is a possibility, as per my conversation with
Rod Rice (it is my guess, not his suggestion):

BFX wants to list on Nasdaq -it is afterall an american
company--, but to do that, the share price must be above
a certain level (5$?) for a while. This share repurchase
may be a way to achieve that goal. Of course, listing on
nasdaq would be accompanied by a secondary offering, allowing
BFX to replenish its coffers...

what is not clear to me is whether the shares purchased would
be cancelled or used as pay package for employees.

just a few thoughts.
