The authors estimate that it each additional homeowner created by the mortgage interest deduction costs the government $53,590, a number they rightly call “staggering”.

The authors are obviously firmly in the Marxist/Statist camp, as are most of your sources. The money earned through an individuals labor and investment is theirs to keep in a free market economy. The money doesn't belong to the government. Tax breaks don't cost the government, taxation by government costs the citizens thier hard earned compensation.
