A friend has bipolar. It is no picnic. Fortunately she responds to lithium and has enough sense of humor to describe her condition as a mineral deficiency.
When she had her first mania, it consumed her and almost killed her. I don't see the condition as preferable. When the mania got bad enough, her principal emotion was panic fear. No picnic at all.
