Buying a new computer today and researching all over the internet but I was thinking about your post and recalling that he'd had his vagus nerves removed--a practice that is now deprecated. So who knows how many biochemical changes such a procedure could influence?
The simple fact, though, is that he was an atheist and therefore any depression he may have had would have come from God's gentleness and kindness. After all, the "Weeping Prophet" (sounds Eeeeky, I know) was laid low into depression by God, even though he sacrificed his entire life for him! How much more severely will God deal with atheists and humanists--and other terrible and immoral people who give thanks to Creator Spirits of their tribes!
"You deceived me, LORD, and I was deceived;
you overpowered me and prevailed.
I am ridiculed all day long;
everyone mocks me.
Whenever I speak, I cry out
proclaiming violence and destruction.
So the word of the LORD has brought me
insult and reproach all day long."
Paranoia also comes heavy upon the depressed breast of those fighting hard to do God's work...
"I am weary of holding it in;
indeed, I cannot.
I hear many whispering,
“Terror on every side!
Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!”
All my friends
are waiting for me to slip, saying,
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
then we will prevail over him
and take our revenge on him.”
But God has the solution for depression...
"Cursed be the day I was born!
May the day my mother bore me not be blessed!
Cursed be the man who brought my father the news,
who made him very glad, saying,
“A child is born to you—a son!”
May that man be like the towns
the LORD overthrew without pity.
May he hear wailing in the morning,
a battle cry at noon.
For he did not kill me in the womb,
with my mother as my grave,
her womb enlarged forever.
Why did I ever come out of the womb
to see trouble and sorrow
and to end my days in shame?"
Depression is not a medical condition. It is laid upon people by God to test their souls. Depression can also cause negative thinking. There is no medical cause for depression or cure. Because diseases are caused by demons and cured by driving the demons away (over a cliff works). And despair is not a disease. It is a gift of God--as Teresa knew.
Most of the devoted people in the bible suffered severe bouts of depression. The supposed author of many Psalms (David) has about 40 psalms where he wallows in his depression. (ex: Psalm 6:6 - I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.)
Others include, Saul, Cain, Elijah, Jonah, and Abraham.
"Just and Righteous", Lot, was probably quite depressed after he impregnated both his daughters but his feelings remain unclear...
And it appears that even the redoubtable master of genocide, Joshua, could occasionally have caught a dim glimpse of depression--though one can hardly imagine why...
And when Jesus was surrounded by weeping he could not help himself and started to weep, as well. It can be very catching, and can thoroughly unman certain dispositions...
Anyway, people should just embrace their depression. It simply means that God loves them with a love that is almost unbearable to witness. And remember the words of the Lord:
"Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
