do you know if this subject has gone to a different thread?

what do you think of general american investors(gam) i last weeks milwaukee sentinel it listed a dividend of $2.95 with record date of
11/14/97 and pay date of 12/23/97?

i really do not understand this concept too well as when a company pays a dividend, the price drops to reflect it and when/ how long before it gets back to your purchase price?
