What's funny is that all discussions of Madoff claim that the MM business he ran was somehow legit. The scam involved counterfeit transactions. Yet, the assumption seems to be that the MM business did not counterfeit trades. At one point, I believe, he was one of the biggest MM's on Nasdaq.
