I'm assuming that the contract did not say that wages would be zero, otherwise no worker would have agreed to it."

When I was a young hippie drifter I worked on several different types of labor crews. In some cases the contractor would take money for room, board, supplies etc to the point that workers would have nothing left or even end up owing the contractor who had supplied them with a tab and lots of beer and such between pay days. Some bad choices made by my colleagues would leave them without options. In other countries where there is extreme poverty and adverse social conditions the offer of a clean place to live with a guarantee of sustainance might be enough to bring a signature binding one to a life long labor contract with no marginal wage at the end.

"If wages turn out to be less than what was in the contract, then there is a contract violation."

Wages can turn out to be less than or equal to other benefits provided by the contractor leaving the laborer with no options, without violating the terms of the contract.

"If one is held against one's will under threat of violence, then one has been kidnapped. Seems to me.

Seem so to me also and yet many jobs carry threats related to coming and going at will. Violent threats are another thing but military service jumps to mind as an example, or private sector jobs where leaving without permission might put someone at risk of immediate harm (not sure which ones would qualify off the top of my head).
