rule-of-law was introduced to secure the assets of the upper class, by giving the middle class a sense of sharing and having a stake

As compared to literally NO "stake" in the previous non-democratic regime?

The very heart of Democracy is providing the governed a stake in their own government. The more stake they have, the less chance of a revolution. The more democracy there is, the more the power of the power elite is diluted.

But, of course, people of your ilk fear democracy.
