We have a lot to learn from the Japanese, a lot!
The key to Japan's leading example in having moved to a more sustainable, aging society is many fold but of significance is:
1. "There’s a single reason why Japan’s 10-year bond yields are below 1.3 percent and Asia’s No. 2 economy isn’t being downgraded. Since about 95 PERCENT of Japan’s debt is held domestically, there’s no risk of capital flight. Japan borrows from its companies and people, an arrangement that’s roughly the mirror image of the U.S."
2....and related to energy, having had no local petroleum resources they have achieved energy efficiencies other countries can only dream about at this stage.
3. They have a modest housing stock (have not over reached into car only subdivisions and two and three home mansions.)
4. They collectively operate by consensus with a long term view..20 years is not uncommon.

They may be becoming self sufficient in food..this I am not so sure about?
