<< In this post, you seem to be using "existentialism" to describe freedom from religious authority and dogma. We all know how you feel about religious authority and dogma and the path prescribed by it. Am I close???
Well yes. Look at history. For all of history, everywhere on earth, and in all cultures, people lived according to very strict cultural rules. Most of those rules were.are very primitive ideas, like subjugating women, racism, sexism, triablism, etc.
JUst go rent the old movie "Annie Oakly" with Barbara stanwyck if you want to see how oppresssive our culture was toward women just a few years ago. Wouldn't even let them vote in this country until 1919. And they still have a very small amount of the worlds wealth.
The insight of the 60's was actually very very simple, except that virtually all the people on earth, for all of history never figured it out?
That simple truth is that every person has the right to manifest their own destiny. Live like they want as long as they do not hurt other people.
That is all the kids of the 60's were fighting for, manifest destiny, yet is was quite a brawl. |
