A state/society (the two are inextricably entangled) is either secular or it is an ecclesiarchy. The only Christian ecclesiarchy left is the Vatican. Since the society of the USA is built on the foundation of its state, and that state is expressly not beholden to any church or religion, why yes, I am under that impression. Are you somehow under the impression that our state and society ARE an ecclesiarchy? Cultural fossils like having a motto incorporating the word "God" on our currency are perfunctory surface dross. Imo. The only meaningful freedom of religion includes, as one of its options, freedom from a given religion. By that definition, Marxist states are ecclesiarchies, the established church being a particularly narrow and ossified stripe of a sort of materialism. <edit> In your original post you mentioned a "progressive secular society". In my first reading I figured "progressive" meant "increasingly secular". However now I see that it might be a codeword for socialist. Which did you have in mind?
