I can see that the government is separate from society's constituent members' beliefs. But it cannot be separate from society: it exists to govern that society, and the two are as interwoven as warp and woof. Distinct but not separate.

I do appreciate that government in this country doesn't try too hard to tell me what to believe. However the idea that our society's system (?) or tradition of liberty is not secular strikes me as odd. While a subset of Christian belief was instrumental in the drafting of this nation's core documents, that does not make the entire foundation non-secular (or to call a manual excavation-enabling implement a spade, faith-based). An oak is not an acorn.
