Follow up - 10 years ago EUR was 0.92 USD, today it is $1.34 - a rise of nearly 50%...and this is a big drop from peak of $1.59 18 months ago.

As to the question of printing paper to get hard goods, somebody mentioned this example:

You are making money and see no reason why you should spend your precious time mowing the lawn when the kid down the street will do it for $5. So he does this for a while and after a couple of years you decide the lawn mower is taking too much space in your garage and you sell it out. The rest of the neighborhood does the same and as a result the lawn mower factory shuts down. Meanwhile the kid down the street builds thriving business mowing the lawns of everybody. A decade later, a financial crisis hits you and not only you can't afford to have the kid mow your lawn, now *you* have to mow lawns to help put bread on the table. Since you don't have a lawn mower anymore, you have to rent one from the kid who used to mow your lawn.

Now the way to avoid the above scenario, is not through impeding free trade, but rather by using the time you saved from not mowing the lawn for educating yourself and producing something more valuable. Sadly, you spent the time to watch TV on Sunday afternoons, which not only did not move you towards bigger better things, but actually contributed to your poor cardio condition and now you can't even push the lawn mower as much as you used to.
