>But decades after decade, generation after generation, we spend a lot more (in real per student terms) without seeing the benefit of all the extra spending.<

If our spending has gone up in real terms, why has the availability of education suffered such erosion? When I was a kid in the 60s, art classes, band, extracurricular activities etc. were more than a privilege; they were a basic feature of suburban life.
Now I see the public school system unable to even buy and keep textbooks. Art, PE etc. are a memory.

What happened?

I am in favor of seeing one aspect of increased competition. I would like to see grading on a curve eliminated. If a student is actually good, [s]he should have the grades to show that. Unfortunately, the parents of hard-working andor talented students are not a large voting bloc.
