A US border protection agent was killed in a shootout with bandits near the increasingly violence-wracked southern US frontier with Mexico, officials said Wednesday.
At least four suspects were arrested but one remained on the loose after the killing late Tuesday near the town of Rio Rico in Arizona, said the US Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP).

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano called the killing of agent Brian Terry "an unconscionable act of violence against the men and women of the Border Patrol and all those who serve and defend our country."

"It is a stark reminder of the very real dangers our men and women on the frontlines confront every day as they protect our communities and the American people," she added in a statement.

The CBP said Terry was shot and killed after he encountered several suspects near Rio Rico, adding that "at least four suspects are in custody while one is still being pursued."
