I think the core of what I am saying is that I am frightened by your statement that we need to give up some freedoms. Which ones? Why? Does a process exist whereby we might get those freedoms back if the suspension should prove to have been ineffective for gaining the expected benefit?

Imo giving up individual and community freedoms in order to make it easier for a paternalistic government to keep "antisocial elements" (like what? Nitrogen? Platinum?) in control has a built-in ratchet. The freedoms don't recover. They keep shrinking unless and until a catastrophic realignment throws out the old government. I don't want to experience a revolution, especially since the outcome is likely to be awful.

In today's media-dominated world that panders to the Average Citizen, the trend is toward socialization, conformism, a celebration of averageness. I consider this mercenary (by the media) and unhealthy (for society at large). I deeply distrust people in places of public power - and this includes the editors and anchorfolk of the land - who speak of welfare (in the broader sense) and think of control.

...I am beginning to meander. Bartender, leave the bottle...
