Thank you. I learned this after I listened to interviews with half a dozen top US CEOs. They were all unanimous about the need for better education by corporations. It is good that they've realized this, though obviously there will be time lag between education and "graduation".

An issue that has not been well discussed, or rather has not been discussed well from the correct perspective, is the nature of tacit contract between the workers and companies, a.k.a job security.

I believe the pervasive corporate anorexia of the past 25 years - the relentless drive to cut fat - has had a long lasting detrimental effect on our social psyche and corporate competitiveness. How you perform as an employee is radically different depending on whether you think you are in a company for the long term or only until you find a better job. Similarly, how you treat your workers is very different depending on if you see them "resources" and "human capital" or partners that you are stuck with for a long time.

The flip side of paying your workers just enough to prevent them from jumping ship to your competitor is that they will deliver as little work and quality as to prevent you from firing them. This does not make for a competitive business.

For anyone interested in becoming a better manager or running their shop better, I highly recommend 12: The Elements of Great Managing
