Yesterday I got a call. An old friend who is a paraplegic of twenty years and who lives alone was freaking out. She was in an accident at work in October, injuring her neck and one arm, rendering her a virtual quadriplegic. Yesterday her care givers had been notified they would no longer be paid to provide services until some required processes had been completed. This created a life threatening situation so I agreed to see what I could do to help. Its not my area and I had to take some time out of my normal responsibilities to explore the problem.

I made calls to attorneys, to the insurance company, to the contracted service provider, and to workers comp. The buck was passed around and around with no one giving me a straight answer about what it would take to get a service provider to this woman's residence. So I started a conference call to explore the possibilities and all I got was bureaucratic thumb twiddling. Finally, I simply stated that I would hold each of them personally liable for what happens to this woman between now and the time her services were restored. They (not so miraculously) came up with an instant solution, and a service provider was dispatched within ten minutes.

I've felt the same way for some time about our political system, we are in crisis and the bureaucrats are twiddling as our situation is worsening.
