If acceptance and recognition is the issue

I think that part of the problem is that shades of gray are missing on the opposition side. I don't think that allowing gays to serve openly in the military requires going as far as acceptance and recognition, only acknowledgment and tolerance. Acceptance and recognition would be a step up, but I'm not sure it's necessary. Grudging tolerance would get the job done, seems to me.

I can understand why recognition and acceptance of the morality of homosexuality is resisted by traditionalists and conservative religious. But begrudging tolerance is harder to understand. According to Lakoff, Strict Father morality requires defending the system of morality from all other systems, which are by definition immoral. Such absolutism is a struggle for me to tolerate.
