Everywhere (In America) we mix in public life with every sort and expect to get along regardless of demographical differences. The military is a macrocosm of public life with limits on retreating to a private haven. Although 'acceptance and recognition' can mean different things to different people, the answer to acceptance in general has already been delivered, by our psych and law institutions. I am not sure 'recognition' adds much to the issue. We don't spend much time 'recognizing' the sexual activity of straight people in the military, we just accept that straight people may be sexually active and it is their business up to the point of harassment or abuse. Outside the military we do have the ability to limit our associations by self-restricting our access to certain arenas. I avoid taverns, crowds, and loud places whenever possible and of course my private life is restricted to people I am close to. Of course I look at military service as something people go do when they have to, I've never been able to get the idea of 'career military.'
